One of the mysteries of life is what our function is and what we are destined to become. Some people leave school, college or university without the remotest idea as to what they want to do or how to earn a living. Yet, others know exactly from a very early age precisely what they want to be and how they want to provide for themselves. And nothing will shake them from their goal. There are others who often have a vision and are called to enter the clergy or help the poor and needy in some self-sacrificial way.
However, not everyone has this inner faith and trust. Therefore, we have to learn the hard way by trial and error which is why some of the most searched phrases on the Internet are self-development and self-improvement.
Anybody investigating these headings soon realises that self-development, self-improvement or personal development are not simply concerned with wealth or financial independence. Many people discover that financial independence does not always provide us with the level of satisfaction we need.
Inside most of us is a feeling that there is something else that requires fulfilment and this is not always to do with organized or traditional religion. Not everyone experiences the blinding flash of light on the road to Damascus. Sometimes it's simply a gradual awareness that there may be more to life than making money and being happy.
Not everybody is prepared to admit to a God although they readily believe there is a Higher Power but without knowing what that Higher Power is or how to reach it. Nevertheless, believing in something is an integral part of personal development because that innate belief is what keeps many people going throughout their lives. Some people have such immense faith and trust that they truly believe in the Biblical promise:
If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you shall say to this mountain, remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you
Other people find fulfilment in generosity even to the extent that they happily give away 10% of all they earn believing that when they have enough or more than enough it's time to help others.
Nevertheless, despite all our best intentions and good works throughout our lives most of us, are at some time or other faced with the light, or perhaps the dark, at the end of the tunnel. And, of course, this is why Spiritual Growth is part of our personal development.
